As an activist for change and equality, Edna Branch Jackson participated in several sit-ins at white-only establishments in Savannah to protest segregation during the 1960s. Jackson also participated in the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and the March from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 led by John Lewis and Hosea Williams. In addition to serving as the first African American female mayor of Savannah from 2012-2015, Jackson was named three times to the Most Influential Georgians list by Georgia Trend magazine and the United Way of the Coastal Empire’s WOMEN UNITED® 2020 Woman of the Year.
